The Kelly

Pre-owned Hermès Kelly: Sellier, Retourne, and which to buy

BRAND Bag Center deals in pre-owned Hermès Kelly bags from Dubai. This page covers the decision that matters most on this model, Sellier against Retourne, then size and leather, and what happens when the Kelly you want is not in the catalogue. Every piece is checked against five physical tests before listing, and a representative brings it to you to inspect before payment.

Worn on the shoulderThe Kelly is the Hermès bag worn on the shoulder, because it takes a detachable strap as well as its single handle.

Two bags, one nameSellier and Retourne are two different bags under one name, and the difference is construction, not trim.

Checked before listingEvery piece is checked against five physical tests before it is listed, and a bag that fails any one is not sold.

Available now

Which Kelly pieces are available now

Everything in the Kelly family held right now is listed below, each with its own page recording construction, size, leather, colour, hardware and condition. A Kelly Pochette is listed as a clutch, not a Kelly bag. When no Kelly handbag is held the list says so, and sourcing is the route.

Kelly handbags

No Kelly handbag is held at the moment.

A Kelly is a size, a construction, a leather, a colour and a hardware finish. Tell us which five and you are told whether it can be found.

Construction

Kelly Sellier or Kelly Retourne, and how to choose

Sellier and Retourne are the same bag built two ways, and the difference is where the seams go.

A Sellier is stitched from the outside, so the seams sit on the edge where you see them. That makes the edges sharp and the body rigid: it holds its trapezoid shape carried or standing, empty or full.

A Retourne is stitched inside and then turned, which is what the name means, so the seams disappear. The edges are rounded and the body soft. It relaxes with carrying and the sides give.

That difference decides the leather. A Sellier needs one firm enough to hold the edge, so Epsom and Box. A Retourne needs one soft enough to drape, so Togo, Clemence and Swift. The hardware, flap, straps and turn are the same on both.

Neither wears better. They wear differently: a Sellier keeps its lines, a Retourne loses them on purpose. Buy the Sellier to have it look the same in five years, the Retourne to look carried.

Size

Which Kelly size to choose

Choose a Kelly by what you will carry: a 25 is a handbag, a 32 is a working bag.

Size and dimensions What it holds How it is carried Who it suits
Mini Kelly 20 Phone, cardholder, keys Crossbody, or by the handle An evening, or carrying almost nothing
Kelly 25, 25 x 18 to 19 x 9 cm Phone, compact wallet, sunglasses Hand or forearm, shoulder on the strap The smallest that works daily
Kelly 28, 28 x 22 x 10 cm Full wallet, sunglasses, umbrella, e-reader Hand, forearm, or hands free on the strap A work day and an evening in one bag
Kelly 32, 32 x 23 x 10 to 11 cm Long wallet, documents, notebook Hand or forearm Papers rather than essentials
Kelly 35, 35 x 24 x 12 cm Documents, small tablet Hand A working bag

Current sizes run 20 to 40. The 15 and the 50 exist but are rare formats. The Mini's measurements vary between sources, so ask for the ones on the bag.

Leather

Which Kelly leather, and which suits which construction

Leather on a Kelly is not separate from construction, because each construction needs a particular leather to work.

Epsom. Pressed grain calf, light, scratch-resistant and firm enough to hold an edge: the Sellier leather. The grain is stamped on, so the colour layer rubs away at the corners and a worn patch cannot be put back.

Box. Smooth, glossy and firm, Sellier only. It takes a patina and scratches readily, so sharp corners on a Box Sellier mean care.

Togo. Grained calf, light, scratch-resistant and soft enough to drape: the default Retourne leather. It slumps more in a 32 or 35 than a 25.

Clemence. A larger grain, matte, the heaviest and softest. A Clemence Retourne sits down into a shape rather than standing up. Swift also takes a Retourne.

The family

The Kelly family: Pochette, Cut and Mini

Three pieces carry the Kelly name without being Kelly handbags.

The Hermès Kelly Pochette is a clutch of about 22 centimetres with the flap, straps, turn and a top handle, and no shoulder strap. It is carried in the hand.

The Kelly Cut is longer and flatter, an envelope shape, handheld and strapless.

The Mini Kelly is a handbag, not a clutch. It keeps the trapezoid shape and takes a removable strap for crossbody wear, and unlike the larger sizes it comes without a lock, keys or clochette.

Against the Birkin

Birkin or Kelly, which suits you

Neither is the better bag. The Birkin is open-topped with two handles, the Kelly has one handle and a shoulder strap, and that difference decides most of it.

Aspect Birkin Kelly
How it is carried Hand or forearm, no shoulder strap Hand, forearm, or hands free on a detachable strap
What it holds More for its size, the top opens wide Less, reached through a flap
How it closes Straps over the plate, flap tucked or over Straps, then a turn, carried closed
In use Opened and shut all day Carried closed, opened when you stop

Choose the Birkin if you get into your bag constantly. Choose the Kelly if you want the strap. Which is easier to be offered in a boutique is not something anyone outside Hermès can tell you. Weighing a Constance instead? That comparison is on the Constance page.

The checks

How a Kelly is checked before it is listed

Every Kelly is checked against the same five tests: stamp and date code, leather and grain, saddle stitching, hardware and touret, and condition. Two details are model-specific. The stamp sits inside, under the front flap on the upper interior panel. And on a Sellier the exterior seams are checked too, because a machine-run seam shows on a visible edge where a hand-stitched one does not.

These are our checks and not Hermès's, which authenticates nothing sold outside its own channels.

Availability

Why a Kelly is hard to buy new

A Kelly is hard to buy new because Hermès does not sell Birkin and Kelly bags on request. They are offered to clients by a sales associate, and no shop can promise one or say when.

On the secondary market the constraint is narrower. A Kelly is a size, a construction, a leather, a colour and a hardware finish, so the bag you want is one combination of five things. That is what makes it findable rather than orderable.GATE 10, same-day or next-day availability

How Hermès availability works
Price

What a pre-owned Kelly costs, and why the price is on request

A pre-owned Kelly is priced per bag, not per model, which is why the figure is on request. Size, construction, leather, colour, hardware, condition and completeness all move it. Construction matters more than first-time buyers expect: a Sellier and a Retourne of the same size and leather do not sit at one price. Ask about a specific bag and you are quoted on it.

Sourcing

If we do not have the Kelly you want

If the Kelly you want is not in the catalogue, say exactly what it is and you are told whether it can be found. Size, construction, leather, colour and hardware: all five, because four out of five is a different bag. A used Hermès Kelly bag in one exact specification is a search, not a stock check.

What comes back is an honest answer, including no. There is no list to join and no deposit.GATE 17, what can actually be sourced, in which sizes and leathers, in what timeframe

Questions

Questions Kelly buyers ask

What is the difference between a Kelly Sellier and a Kelly Retourne?

A Sellier is stitched outside, so the seams show and the bag holds a rigid, sharp shape. A Retourne is stitched inside and turned, so the seams disappear, the edges round off and the bag softens. Same hardware, a different bag.

Which Kelly size should I choose?

By what you carry. The 25 takes a phone, a compact wallet and sunglasses. The 28 adds a full-size wallet and an umbrella. The 32 and the 35 carry documents and a small tablet. Current sizes run from 20 to 40.

Can a Hermès Kelly be worn crossbody?

Yes, on the detachable shoulder strap, which separates the Kelly from most Hermès bags. Whether it sits crossbody or on the shoulder depends on the size and your height, so try it first. The Mini is worn crossbody most easily.

Should I buy a Birkin or a Kelly?

The Kelly if you want your hands free, because it takes a shoulder strap and a Birkin does not. The Birkin if you open your bag constantly, because its top opens wide and a Kelly is reached through a flap.

How much does a pre-owned Hermès Kelly cost?

It depends on the bag, not the model, so each is quoted alone. Size, construction, leather, colour, hardware and condition all move it, and a Sellier and a Retourne of one size do not match. Ask about a specific used Kelly bag.

How can you tell a genuine Hermès Kelly?

Five physical tests before listing: stamp and date code, leather and grain, saddle stitching, hardware and touret, and condition. On a Sellier the exterior seams are checked too. These are our checks, not Hermès's, which authenticates nothing outside its own channels.

Is a Hermès Kelly a good investment?

Hermès bags have held value better than most handbags, and the market for second hand Kelly bags has been durable. What a bag holds depends on size, construction, leather, colour and condition. No dealer can promise what it will be worth later.

What if you do not have the Kelly I want?

Tell us the size, construction, leather, colour and hardware, and you are told whether it can be found, including when it cannot. There is no list to join and no deposit, and nobody can promise you a particular Kelly before looking.
